2 women from Sideli in Naal village, Pokhari block, were attacked by a bear while gathering grass near a forested area about 200 meters from their home. The incident occurred around 8 in the morning, and both women fell after being knocked off a ledge following the bear’s assault. Family members and other villagers reached the spot and they were rushed to Pokhari CHC for medical care. Doctors confirmed that Vimala Devi, aged 55, died on arrival. Lakshmi Devi, aged 42, was seriously injured and referred to a higher center, but died en route near Srinagar. Forest officials and local authorities visited the scene and hospital to assess the situation and assist the families. A deputy forest officer, a sub-divisional officer, and other forest personnel participated in the response, inspecting the site and coordinating with medical teams. The district administration assured the bereaved family appropriate compensation as per rules. Despite medical attention, both women died as a result of the attack. Villagers expressed anger and fear, citing persistent bear activity in the area and calling for immediate measures to reduce bear encounters, increase forest patrols, and enhance safety for residents and people venturing to forest areas.
