A fire broke out at around 6:00 AM at Kotdwar’s Jhandachowk Tourist Complex on Wednesday, destroying goods in 3 shops and damaging others on the first and second floors. Firefighters and SDRF personnel took nearly 2 hours to contain the blaze, while a juice seller helped rescue 3 family members from the third floor.

An elephant herd damaged 3 residential buildings, a solar streetlight and 2 mango trees at Haldoon Tok in Jaurasi Talli village, Kotdwar. Villagers have sought compensation, stronger forest patrols and faster construction of barriers and solar fencing after the incident created fear in the area.

Kotdwar police have arrested Sumit Bisht, alias Gaplu, after his uncle alleged that he was threatened with a country-made pistol. Police said they recovered the weapon and 2 live cartridges from the accused near Malan bridge on Friday night. He is being presented before the court for remand proceedings.
