A 6-year-old girl, her mother and grandmother were attacked by wasps in Bhathedi village of Pithoragarh’s Moonakot block on Monday. The insects followed the trio to their home, leaving all 3 with multiple stings to their heads and bodies.
The incident has renewed concern over repeated wasp attacks in the border district. Questions are also being raised about the authorities’ inability to address the problem, according to the report.
Attack during grass cutting
Bhagirathi Devi, 50, wife of the late Jamun Singh, had gone to the forest to cut grass with her daughter Rekha Devi, 29. Rekha had arrived at her maternal home and had brought her 6-year-old daughter Mannat with her.
A wasp nest in a tree was disturbed, after which the insects emerged and attacked the 3 members of the family. Rekha ran towards home while carrying Mannat, with Bhagirathi accompanying them.
The wasps continued pursuing them for about 15 minutes. The 3 managed to enter the house, but by then they had suffered several stings across their heads and bodies. Their condition became serious after the attack.
Grandmother admitted to hospital
Family members took all 3 victims to the district hospital, where they received treatment. Emergency Medical Officer Dr Rahul said Rekha and Mannat were recovering.
Bhagirathi remained in serious condition and was admitted to the hospital for further care. The available report does not provide details of any official action to remove the nest or prevent another attack in the area.
Wasp attacks have reportedly been increasing in Pithoragarh, making incidents in forest and rural areas a concern for residents. The latest case also highlights the risk faced by people who depend on forest areas for routine work such as collecting grass.
Conclusion
The Bhathedi incident left a child, her mother and grandmother injured by wasp stings. Rekha and Mannat improved after treatment, while Bhagirathi Devi required hospital admission because of her serious condition.
