A rescue operation is underway in Uttarkashi’s Kedartal area to locate mountaineers in a narrow valley at 4000 metres, where the terrain is making the search more difficult.

According to Uttarkashi district administration, a 10-member team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) has been deployed to the area by helicopter. The team will continue the search from the site.

The Gangotri National Park team is also involved in the operation. It is moving from below and checking hollows, caves and other places where a person could take shelter for safety.

Narrow valley creates operational challenges

District Magistrate Uttarkashi Prashant Arya said the current terrain differs from the rescue operation conducted near the Kalindi Pass, also known as Kalindi Khal, last month. That location was comparatively open and wider, allowing a helicopter to land.

The wider terrain also made it easier for rescuers to observe the area from the helicopter. The Kedartal valley, by contrast, is narrow, creating additional difficulties for aerial observation and access.

The SDRF and NIM team has been positioned at the location, while the Gangotri National Park team is approaching from the lower side. Additional teams may be brought in if the operation requires further support.

Weather may help the search

Clear weather was expected on Tuesday, which could support the rescue effort and improve operating conditions in the high-altitude area. The next search activity is expected to focus on the narrow valley and possible shelter points below.

Conclusion

The Kedartal search is continuing with a 10-member SDRF and NIM team on site and a Gangotri National Park team searching from below. The narrow valley remains the main challenge, while clearer weather could assist further operations.
