The Haridwar food safety department has taken action against the sale and supply of open buckwheat flour in the SIDCUL area. Officials collected samples from 2 establishments and sent them for testing, while 13 kg of flour was destroyed at the sites.
The inspection took place on Tuesday under the leadership of District Food Safety Officer Mahimanand Joshi. The team checked food businesses and supply vehicles after receiving confidential information about the activity.
Inspection at Shailesh Provision Store
Officials found open buckwheat flour kept for sale at Shailesh Provision Store in Mahadevpuram. The flour bag did not carry manufacturing or expiry dates.
After collecting a sample, the team destroyed the remaining 5 kg of flour at the store. The action concerned flour being sold openly without the required date information.
Supply vehicle leads team to second trader
During the inspection, the team found e-rickshaw driver Harshit Awasthi supplying 8 kg of open buckwheat flour in plastic bags. According to the account given during questioning, he had brought the flour from Mahadev Traders at Kala Gate in Shiv Vihar Colony.
The team accompanied the driver to Mahadev Traders and inspected the establishment. Officials collected another flour sample there and destroyed the remaining 8 kg by burying it in a pit.
The 2 destroyed quantities total 13 kg: 5 kg from Shailesh Provision Store and 8 kg from Mahadev Traders. The samples will be examined to determine their compliance with food safety requirements.
Court proceedings being prepared
District Food Safety Officer Mahimanand Joshi said proceedings are being prepared for filing in court against both traders. The proposed cases concern conducting food businesses without licences and selling open buckwheat flour without manufacturing and expiry dates.
The department has not stated the test results of either sample. Further action will depend on the inspection record and the findings from the laboratory examination.
