Dehradun’s DBS PG College remained tense after NSUI’s victory in the student union election, following campus clashes and an alleged late-night abduction involving 2 students. Police later rescued one student from the ABVP’s state office in Karanpur and registered a kidnapping case against named and unidentified suspects.

The election took place on 29 September. NSUI candidate Abhinav Kaflia defeated ABVP candidate Abhishek Negi for the president’s by 94 votes.

Dispute began during victory celebrations

At about 12:30 PM PM on Thursday, NSUI-backed female students were distributing sweets on the campus. An argument reportedly began with some ABVP supporters and developed into pushing.

Supporters from both organisations then reached the spot. Other students also became involved, after which the dispute turned into physical clashes. Several students from both sides sustained injuries, according to the report.

The college remained tense for about 2.5 hours. Later, when representatives of both groups went to Dalanwala police station with complaints, another dispute reportedly broke out there.

Dalanwala Inspector Vinod Gusain said police had received complaints from both sides and were taking action on them. The complaints remain part of the ongoing police process.

College closed amid concerns over outside students

Principal Dr Anil Pal said some outsiders and students from other colleges had entered the campus during the dispute. The college decided to remain closed on 3 October, in addition to the holiday on 2 October, to help maintain order.

The administration also issued students a strict warning to maintain discipline on the premises. Police presence was increased in and around the college and Karanpur as a precaution.

2 students allegedly taken from room

The matter intensified at about 10:00 PM when NSUI alleged that 2 students had been abducted. According to CO Raipur Vandana Verma, the students were sleeping in a room at ATS Colony on Tapovan Road that belonged to Abhinav Kaflia, the newly elected president.

The allegation states that several students linked to ABVP reached the room and forcibly took away Dhruv and Rahul. Rahul was allegedly taken to Karanpur near DBS College, while Dhruv was reportedly held at the ABVP’s state office in Karanpur.

NSUI also alleged that the students were assaulted while being held. After receiving the information, police and civil administration officials reached the office with a large force and rescued Dhruv.

The material available does not establish the allegations as proven. Police investigation and the complaints filed by both sides will determine the facts of the incident.

Kidnapping case registered

A kidnapping case has been registered against 3 named accused, including Himanshu Kumar and Sujit Thapa, along with several unidentified people. The report does not state whether arrests have been made.

CO Vandana Verma said the situation was normal and under control. Heavy police deployment remained in the DBS College and Karanpur areas as a precaution.

Conclusion

The dispute moved from campus clashes after the NSUI election victory to an alleged abduction case. Police have rescued one student, registered a case and are examining complaints from both sides.
