Students in 54 government high schools upgraded to intermediate level in Uttarakhand are preparing for board examinations without the lecturers assigned to teach their subjects. In several schools, every lecturer is vacant, while others have teachers only for selected subjects.
The shortage has put the availability of subject teachers under scrutiny and has affected the operation of regular classes in some schools. The schools were upgraded to intermediate level in September–October, but lecturer appointments have not yet been completed.
Schools facing the shortage
The issue is particularly visible at Government Inter College Manpur in Kashipur, Udham Singh Nagar. The school has 35 students enrolled in Class 11 and 10 sanctioned lecturer s, but all 10 s are vacant. The principal’s is also unfilled.
At Government Inter College Banjarawala in Dehradun, 4 lecturers are working against 9 sanctioned s. All 4 teach science subjects, leaving students studying other subjects without teachers in their respective disciplines.
Government Inter College Misraj Patti in Sahaspur block has 5 vacant lecturer s. Several other schools, including Government Inter College Mundhan, also have multiple vacancies.
Ramesh Painuli, former provincial general secretary of the Government Teachers’ Association, said the Education Department upgraded high schools to intermediate level without appointing lecturers for the required subjects. He said more than 100 schools across the state are facing lecturer shortages that are directly affecting students’ studies.
District-wise spread
The 54 upgraded schools are spread across 13 districts. Their distribution is:

The shortage is not limited to newly upgraded schools. Government schools that were already operating at the intermediate level also continue to have vacant lecturer s, according to the report.
Department’s response
The Education Department has instructed LT teachers to teach students with the available resources until lecturers are appointed. The department is also expecting some lecturers through the State Public Service Commission.
Vinod Simlalti, director of secondary education, said the lecturers received through the commission would be ed at schools where they are most needed. He said efforts were under way to appoint lecturers to the 54 schools as soon as possible.
Until those appointments are made, students in the affected schools will continue to depend on existing teachers for instruction and examination preparation. The immediate concern is whether schools without subject lecturers can provide regular classes before the board examinations.
Conclusion
Uttarakhand’s 54 recently upgraded government schools are yet to receive lecturers, with some having no lecturers at all. The department has ordered LT teachers to continue instruction and plans to make appointments through the State Public Service Commission.
