JHULAGHAT, Pithoragarh: A 21-year-old newlywed woman died by suicide in Nepal’s Bajhang district on Tuesday, police said. Her husband and mother-in-law were arrested after relatives accused them of forcing her to take the step.

The woman, identified as Kavita Pathak, was a resident of Tamtoli in Bunggal Municipality-4, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Yogendra Timilsina. Police said she was found hanging.

Arrests follow relatives’ complaint

Kavita had married Saroj Pathak, also a resident of Tamtoli, in a love marriage about 10 months earlier, police said. Her brother, Satyaraj Joshi, and sister-in-law, Tulsi Joshi, filed a complaint with the Nepal police.

The complaint alleged that Kavita’s husband and mother-in-law had forced her to die by suicide. Following the complaint, police arrested Saroj Pathak and his mother, Kamala Pathak, and sent them to jail, according to the report.

The allegation has not been established by a court. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Kavita’s death and the claims made in the complaint.

The case is being reported from Bajhang, Nepal, an area across the Indian border from the Pithoragarh region. The available information does not indicate any further arrests, charges or court findings.
