Electricity supply was disrupted for around 6 hours across several parts of Haldwani on Saturday because of maintenance work on power lines and substations. The interruption also affected water supply, as 10 to 12 tubewells could not operate while the feeders remained switched off.
More than 50,000 residents faced the impact of the outage, according to the details available from the power and water-supply disruption. Areas connected to several substations reported interruptions, while some parts of Gaulapar received electricity only by evening 5:00.
Areas affected by the power shutdown
Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited said maintenance work had been scheduled by PITCUL at the 220 kV Kamlawaganja substation and the 132 kV Kathgodam substation. The related 33 kV lines were kept shut during the work, affecting supply from several connected substations.
The Kaladhungi Chauraha substation areas affected from morning 11:00 included Bareilly Road, Azad Nagar, Rampur Road, the market area, Nainital Road, Station Road, KD Road and Gandhi Nagar.
Supply was also interrupted in Dhan Mill, Uttar Ujala and Nai Basti, which are connected to the Terah Beegah substation. The Kathgodam Hydel Gate substation areas of Mukhani, Town-1, Town-2, Town-3 and Hydel Colony were affected as well.
The HMT Ranikhet substation covers areas including Gayatri Nagar, Sheesh Mahal and Bhujiyaghat, where the maintenance-related interruption was also reported.
In Gaulapar, the affected areas connected to the Gaulapar substation included Nalkoop, Danibangar, Kalichaur, the stadium area and the 28-MLD zone. Supply was also disrupted around St Paul’s, Nawabi Road and Rajpura through the Subhash Nagar substation.
The Sheesh Mahal GIS substation-related areas of MES, Calltax, Do Nahariya, Naya Awas Vikas and Hydel Gate also faced disruption during the work.
Water supply affected
The electricity shutdown caused a water shortage in several parts of Haldwani because tubewells dependent on the affected feeders could not function. The disruption was reported in areas including Belbaba, Khanna Farm, Judge Farm and Tallli Haldwani, where feeders were switched off.
Water supply was also affected around Sushila Tiwari Hospital, Bareilly Road, Rampur Road and Nainital Road. Gandhi Nagar, Mukhani, Awas Vikas and several other localities faced similar problems.
PITCUL had issued a shutdown schedule for maintenance of power stations ahead of Diwali. The planned work was therefore linked to the scheduled maintenance programme rather than an unplanned failure, according to the information provided.
Power department statement
Pradeep Bisht, executive engineer of the city division of the Energy Corporation, said work on the electricity lines was under way. He added that consumers had been informed about the scheduled interruption in advance.
The reported impact included both household electricity use and essential water pumping. Residents in the affected areas therefore had to manage a temporary power outage alongside reduced water availability while the maintenance work continued.
Conclusion
Scheduled maintenance at the Kamlawaganja and Kathgodam substations disrupted power across several Haldwani areas for about 6 hours and stopped 10 to 12 tubewells, leaving more than 50,000 residents facing electricity and water-supply problems.
