Local representatives have asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to improve and pave the Tipri-Chah-Peepaldali motor road before construction begins on the proposed Tipri-Peepaldali ring road in Tehri district. The existing route is being sought as an alternative road during the future ring road work.
The proposal is part of wider road planning under the Tehri Lake Development Scheme. A ring road has been proposed on both sides of the Tehri dam reservoir. Work on the Koti Colony-Jakh-Dobra road is already in progress, while a survey is underway for the Rajakhet-Khandgaon to Chanthi section.
The Tipri-Peepaldali ring road has also been proposed, although work on it may still take considerable time. Even so, residents and local representatives want the Tipri-Chah-Peepaldali road upgraded before activity begins on that project.
Demand for an alternative route
Chah Gadoliya village head Vinod Singh Gusain, Swadi village head Rakesh Kumain, former village head Umed Singh Panwar and former area panchayat member Jaspal Singh Panwar said the Tipri-Chah road has remained in poor condition for a long period.
The 13-km road was transferred from the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to the PWD. Its improvement and paving proposal is currently pending with the government, according to the report.
The representatives said upgrading the route could allow traffic travelling towards Srinagar and Ghansali to use it. They also said the proposed Tipri-Chah-Kandikhal motor road could reduce the distance to Srinagar.
Their request is for work on the Tipri-Chah route to begin as soon as possible. The proposed upgrade would, in their view, give people another road option while the Tipri-Peepaldali ring road is being developed.
PWD response
Rajendra Kumar Tamta, executive engineer of the PWD’s Provincial Division in Baurari, said work on the Tipri-Peepaldali ring road could still be a long way off. He confirmed that the proposal to improve and pave the Tipri-Chah road is pending with the government.
Tamta said work on the road can begin only after the proposal receives approval. This means the immediate next step is an administrative decision on the pending proposal rather than the start of road construction.
Conclusion
Local representatives want the 13-km Tipri-Chah-Peepaldali road upgraded as an alternative route before the proposed Tipri-Peepaldali ring road work begins. The PWD says construction can start only after government approval of the pending proposal.
