Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched and inaugurated 5 projects worth ₹20.55 crore at the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University campus in Selakui, Dehradun, on October 19, 2026.
The programme included foundation stones for 3 projects valued at ₹20.21 crore and the inauguration of 2 projects costing ₹34 lakh. Dhami also offered prayers to Goddess Saraswati and paid tribute to former leader Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna at his statue.
Focus on medical education
Dhami said the university is contributing to the growth of medical education in Uttarakhand and helping prepare young people for careers in healthcare. He said new facilities on the campus would provide students with a stronger academic environment while supporting development in the surrounding area.
The chief minister said the state government wants every student trained in medical education in Uttarakhand to serve as a skilled doctor, nursing officer or other healthcare professional. He expressed confidence that students would bring recognition to the university and the state through their ability, hard work and commitment to public service.
Dhami said the state government has submitted a proposal to the Union Health Ministry for establishing a super-speciality hospital on the university campus. Further work will begin after approval from the central government.
Expansion of healthcare facilities
According to the chief minister, 5 government medical colleges are currently operating in Uttarakhand, while 2 more are under construction. The state also has 9 nursing colleges and 3 nursing schools in operation.
Super-speciality services are being expanded at medical colleges in Dehradun, Haldwani and Srinagar. Dhami also said an advanced cancer institute is being built in Haldwani, while district hospitals and community health centres are being strengthened.
In Udham Singh Nagar district, an AIIMS satellite centre is being constructed in Kichha at a cost of ₹351 crore. The facility is expected to extend modern healthcare services to a large population in the region.
The government is also using telemedicine and helicopter ambulance services to improve access to healthcare in remote and difficult areas. Dhami said recruitment of doctors, nursing officers and paramedical staff, along with improvements in training facilities, is continuing in government hospitals and medical colleges.
Training for overseas employment
Dhami said the state is providing foreign-language training to help young people access international employment opportunities. He said 60 candidates secured employment in Japan in 2023, while 13 candidates obtained jobs in Germany in 2025.
He referred to Sapna Rana, a Uttarakhand resident who received German-language training before securing employment in Germany. Dhami said the example showed how young people from the state are gaining international recognition through their skills and talent.
He added that students educated in Uttarakhand are now working with institutions including AIIMS, PGI, the Railways and the Military Nursing Service. The state government, he said, remains committed to securing young people’s futures and improving their employment prospects.
Dhami also said the government had introduced a strict anti-copying law to prevent irregularities in recruitment examinations.
Medical Health and Medical Education Minister Subodh Uniyal said the state government was continuing efforts to expand medical education and strengthen healthcare services across Uttarakhand.
Conclusion
The event combined ₹20.55 crore in university projects with a proposed super-speciality hospital and a wider state programme covering medical education, healthcare access, staff training and overseas employment opportunities.
