GARUR, Bageshwar — The poor condition of the Bund-Kansyari motor road has made daily travel difficult for residents, with walking now considered risky on several stretches. Mud has spread across the route, affecting schoolchildren and villagers who depend on it for regular movement.
Residents say the road was expected to improve vehicle access after construction. Instead, damaged sections and the loss of older footpaths have made even short journeys challenging. They are now seeking immediate work to make the route safely walkable.
Temporary culvert damaged again
A temporary culvert built earlier on the directions of the district magistrate has broken down again. Residents said it did not last even one month. They also said 2 weeks have passed since the rain stopped, but no repair work has been carried out on the road.
The damaged crossing has added to the difficulties faced by pedestrians. Schoolchildren and elderly residents are particularly vulnerable while crossing muddy and uneven sections. Vehicle movement is also affected by the condition of the route.
Naveen Singh Rana, a vehicle driver, said mud at several points was causing serious problems for pedestrians. He said the temporary culvert built about one month earlier had again been damaged.
Residents raise concern over medical access
Mohan Singh Bharda, a resident, said road cutting during construction had destroyed older walking paths. Residents had initially demanded tarring and soling on the road, but the immediate need was now to make it usable for pedestrians, he said.
Durga Devi, another resident, said the situation was especially worrying when a pregnant woman or a seriously ill patient needed to reach hospital. She said taking such patients by vehicle was difficult, while carrying them on a stretcher or palanquin was also a major challenge.
Rajendra Singh, a resident, said the department had taken no visible initiative to repair the road even after 2 weeks without rain. He said the route remained filled with mud, making movement extremely difficult.
Department says contractor must complete work
Govind Nath, an assistant engineer with the Public Works Department, said the contractor had not yet completed the work on the road. He said instructions had been issued to correct the problems as soon as possible.
The residents’ immediate demand is for the route to be made safe for walking. Until the damaged culvert and muddy sections are addressed, children, elderly people and those needing medical care will continue to face difficulties using the road.
Conclusion
The Bund-Kansyari road remains difficult and risky for pedestrians because of mud, a damaged temporary culvert and unfinished construction work. The Public Works Department says the contractor has been directed to make the necessary repairs soon.
